Yeoville Dentist’s Dr Ayesha Kadwa gives advice on when parents should take their children to the dentist for the first time.
Parents often ask us at what age should children start seeing the dentist. The simple answer is once a child has teeth!
Early checkups with a dentist are encouraged for the following reasons:
1 Checking teeth development
Dentists check to see if your child’s teeth are developing correctly.
We check to see if they have any cavities, if their oral hygiene is good, if they have any oral habits that may later affect their teeth development such as thumb sucking or grinding their teeth at night.
If caught early, your child can avoid losing teeth before they need to.
2. Preparing your child a lifetime of relaxed and comfortable dental visits
It is important for children to be comfortable with going to the dentist. This is much easier when your first visit is for a play in the chair and a general check-up rather than for a toothache.
During a first check-up, we will generally introduce ourselves, give the child a ride on the chair, polish their teeth, while explaining what we are doing. We then reward them by giving them a balloon and a toy or 2 to let them know that coming to the dentist can be a positive experience.
We will also do a check-up and let you know exactly what is happening in your child’s mouth and what treatment, if any, is required.
If a child knows that coming to the dentist can be exciting and positive, they will have a positive mindset when it comes to their dental health from an early age. They will not delay dental treatment when required and because of this and will manage to maintain their teeth all through life.
During the check-up, if there are any issues, we will suggest any needed treatments. The sooner a problem is attended to, the less pain your child will go through, the treatment will be less invasive (e.g. a cavity will be smaller, when treated earlier) and possibly less costly.
Most patients leave their dental issues until they feel pain, which could result in a more intensive and expensive dental procedure.
4. Oral hygiene instructions
We will also teach you and your child the right techniques of brushing and flossing and caring for teeth. This too will create a lifetime of good oral habits.
